Toward the topic: "Dumbest Alien Invasions"

Author's Commentary: "Culicidae"

Last week’s story was on the heavy side, and this week’s topic “Dumbest Alien Invasions” was itself a nice light topic. So I decided to hop back into the realm of “comedy.” Again, I am reluctant to claim the comedy genre as waters I belong in, so scare quotes. But it was fun to take another stab at writing something comical by coming up with the dumbest alien invasion I could envision. Technically, it’s a very passive aggressive ‘invasion,’ but the themes have usually been a start point and it goes from there, like this one.

For the record, I’m not sure if my characters’ choices would be my list exactly. Culicidae, yes, would probably be on my list. I’m not sure I can think of a plant that should top the story’s suggestion, so maybe my protagonists had a good list. Speaking of comical, in addition to attempting some terrible character acting (apologies to my Russian, Croatian, and especially Serbian friends), I had a little fun playing with voice effects. That took an insane amount of editing time—enough that I’m probably not going to make a habit of it. But it was amusing, at least for me anyway.
